‘Hoosiers’ celebration continues

Knightstown’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of the film “Hoosiers” continues this week with more exciting events beginning Thursday.

A historic landmark lecture and vintage fashion show will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hoosier Gym, 355 North Washington Street, Knightstown. An old-fashioned country breakfast will take place at the Hickory Huskers’ Center Court. The Rev. Mervin Kilmer, president of the Hoosier Gym and former chaplain and dean of students at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Knightstown, will address the crowd about the history of the Hoosier Gym, how it was constructed with private funding, chosen as the location for the movie, and restored for public use as a community center.

One of Knightstown’s other landmarks will also be a topic of discussion.

Robert Myers, lifelong Knightstown resident and president of Historic Knightstown, Inc. will share the history of the Knightstown Academy. Historic Knightstown, Inc. was formed in the 1980s by local preservationists and was instrumental in saving the 1876 schoolhouse, unique for its twin towers topped by a large globe and telescope. The Academy is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Also at the breakfast will be a vintage fashion show, which will feature ladies’ dresses spanning the 1850s through the 1950s. The dresses are from a collection of Melva Smith of Greenfield, who will narrate the show. Smith is a member of the Hancock County Historical Society and has been collecting vintage fashions since 1981. Knightstown High School cheerleaders will be modeling the dresses.

Tickets for the breakfast are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and can be purchased at the Hoosier Gym, Old Hoosier House Bed and Breakfast, Knightstown Public Library, Knightstown Antique Mall and the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau in New Castle.

Other highlights for the rest of the celebration include:

n Tin Can Tourists: 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hoosier Gym. See RVs spanning four decades as this caravan, traveling U.S. 40, stops at the Hoosier Gym. A rare Curtiss Aero Car and a 1936 Bowlus Road Chief towed by a 1937 Buick Roadmaster, as well as other fine examples of recreational vehicles from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s will be on display.

n Hoosiers Reunion All-Star Classic: 6 p.m. Friday at the Hoosier Gym. The All-Star doubleheader will feature the best of the 2006 boys’ and girls’ high school players the state of Indiana has to offer, including Rushville’s own Amanda Stull and Brandon Tucker. Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Ashley Barlow and Amber Harris will also be featured in the game, making this one of the toughest tickets in Indiana. Boys and girls teams will be signing autographs at half-time of each game.

n Hoosiers Classic 3 on 3 Tournament: 8 a.m. Saturday. Come to the center of Hoosier Hysteria and play in the Hoosier Classic. Open to all ages and abilities, boys and girls. Weather permitting, games will be played outdoors with finals played Sunday in the Hoosier Gym.

n ‘50s cruise-in and sock hop: 7 p.m. Saturday. Join everyone at the Hoosier Gym for vintage automobiles, music, prizes and refreshments.

n “Hoosiers” movie screening: 7 p.m. Sunday. Screening of the movie “Hoosiers” in the place where it all began, the Hoosier Gym.

Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
In an update to this story, the City announced plans today to open Waggener Community Pool earlier than originally planned due to expected high temperatures over Memorial Weekend. Mayor Mike Pavey has asked that the pool be open this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The pool will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day and Tuesday, and open again Wednesday, May 30, as was originally scheduled.
