Teens slightly injured in county accident

Black ice makes driving treacherous

Two Rushville teens escaped serious injury Tuesday evening after being involved in a single-vehicle accident shortly before 9 p.m. when their vehicle slid off a county road and struck a Duke Energy power pole.

According to investigating officer Terry Drake of the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, the teenage driver—later identified as Jeremy L. Glover, 16, of Rushville—was eastbound on CR 300N when he lost control of his vehicle due to black ice on the road.

“The young driver and his teenage passenger walked to a nearby residence following the accident. The teens stayed at the residence until medical personnel from Life Ambulance arrived,” Drake said.

Glover’s 1994 Chevrolet Lumina sustained extensive damage as a result of the accident, rendering it inoperable and requiring that it be towed from the scene.

“I just came through the bridge and the roads are covered by a sheet of ice. Use extreme caution as you approach,” deputy Steve Houston radioed to responders as he approached from the north.

Glover was taken to Rush Memorial Hospital by a parent who arrived on the scene following the accident. The unidentified front seat passenger, also a minor, was transported to RMH by medical personnel for unspecified injuries. Though not believed to be serious or life threatening, the full extent of their injuries was unknown at press time.

Tuesdays daytime temperatures in the low 40s caused snow to melt. That moisture froze as evening temperatures again dipped below freezing. The re-freeze coupled with dense fog caused a number of slide-off accidents due to black ice.

Moisture on roads and a drop in temperature results in what is commonly referred to as black ice.

The term black ice refers to a situation where roads appear to be merely wet when they are actually covered by a thin sheet of ice.

The ice frequently makes stopping nearly impossible and curves and small hills difficult to navigate.

Sunshine, combined with vehicle traffic during daytime hours, generates enough heat to melt the snow on local roads. That moisture re-freezes shortly after sunset.

Local and county law enforcement personnel want to stress that motorists should use extreme caution when driving this time of year.

As treacherous as ice-covered roads are, early morning and evening fog adds to diminished driving conditions. Drivers should reduce their speed and drive cautiously—especially on county roads, while crossing over bridges or overpasses, and around curves where standing water may freeze.

Low lying areas and stretches of roadway where the sun is obstructed by tree cover are two other areas in which even thin layers of ice are slow to melt and where fog is likely.
