If The LEAGUE had a Hall of Fame, the coaches (teachers) and players (students) of its inaugural season of play would certainly be worthy of a spot. Together, they contributed more than $2.7 million in time, talent, and treasure to communities across the country.
The LEAGUE, a new youth-service organization that launched nationally in November, recently celebrated these accomplishments at its first annual National Awards and Recognition Luncheon.
The luncheon event, hosted by Queen Latifah, was held at Hudson Terrace in New York City. Assisting Queen Latifah were award presenters Senator Harris Wofford; singer and American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle; Senior VP of Marketing for Cartoon Network Dennis Adamovich; CNN.com Live news anchor Nicole Lapin; Director of USA Freedom Corps Henry C. Lazano; actor Steven Baldwin; and The LEAGUE Director of Operations Mickie Rinehart.
Arlington Elementary School, the National Elementary School Champion, was one of only 12 top performing schools and classrooms across the nation being honored at this event.
Mary Wilkinson and Jana Spurlin represented the school and accepted a trophy from Melinda Doolittle.
“In less than one year’s time, The LEAGUE has registered hundreds of schools and thousands of classrooms nationwide,” Mindy Propper, Chief Operating Officer, The LEAGUE, said. “Together, we’re making a positive difference in communities of all shapes and sizes throughout the country, and we’ve only just begun.”
Created by a consortium of business, education, government, media, non-profit leaders and youth, The LEAGUE empowers students to “get in the game” of giving by providing free resources for teachers to engage students in making a positive difference in their community and world.
