County commissioners address several issues

The Rush County Commissioners met Monday and had few items brought before them. County Solid Waste Director Carole Yeend announced that a “Clean Green Rush County Clean-up Day” collection will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 at the Rushville Conservation Club, 1204 East SR 44.

The collection effort will also include discarded tires. According to Yeend, there will be a fee associated with the tire collection: $2 for standard vehicle tires, $7 for tractor-trailer tires and $20 for farm tractor tires.

In other matters, Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood sought and gained permission to make necessary repairs to the garage located at the rear of the jail.

Earlier this summer Sherwood explained that the roof of the structure was in disrepair.

As a result of handicap regulations Sherwood also sought direction with respect to making additional repairs to the wheelchair ramp and railing located on the First Street entrance to the building. The issue will be revisited at a future meeting after the sheriff gains information as to the required necessary updates.

In a final matter, Sherwood informed the county leaders that Doug Keith was recently hired as a merit deputy and will begin working for the county law enforcement agency Saturday.

Rush County Highway Superintendent Jerry Sitton gained the necessary signatures from the county leaders for repairs to Bridge 105 on CR 450W. The bridge spans Mud Creek. No time table was given for the repair and impending road closure. According to Sitton, his department is currently unable to fund the project as a result of county highway efforts in the days and weeks following the June 3 tornado.

“We will have to gain the necessary funding to move forward with this project. Currently we just do not have the funding in the budget to do this repair,” Sitton said.

Additionally, the roof repair on the clock tower of the courthouse will be re-addressed at a future meeting. The Ohio based Traditions Company has been contacted to complete the $24,600 repair.

According to the commissioners and the county attorney, the contract submitted by the company requires a down payment of one-third of the total repair cost prior to the repairs beginning followed by two additional payments with no completion date set for the completion of the project.

Following a brief discussion, the county leaders took the matter under advisement, citing that they want the county to be satisfied the repairs are completed without problems prior to finalizing payment.
