Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday a caller to the Rush County Sheriff’s Department dispatch center reported that an injury accident had just occurred on U.S. 52 near CR 800W.
The call resulted in multiple units from the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department, RCSD and RMH Ambulance being dispatched to the scene.
Responders found that a wandering horse had been struck and killed by an eastbound vehicle.
According to investigating officer deputy Doug Keith of the RCSD, Kwin M. Romans, 30, of Rushville, was eastbound when, as she approached CR 800W, she saw something in her lane of travel.
“I never had time to avoid striking the animal and did not know what I hit until I got out of the vehicle,” Romans told Keith.
The force of the collision knocked the animal into the westbound lane, killing the horse immediately, and caused extensive damage to the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Romans was driving.
U.S. 52 was closed and traffic was rerouted around the accident scene for nearly an hour as the investigation and clean-up of the area continued.
Keith said that the horse was being cared for by nearby resident Scott Pruitt. It escaped from a fenced area and walked onto the highway.
This was the third county accident in recent months involving animals straying onto a county road or highway and being struck by a vehicle.
Romans was uninjured; following initial treatment at the scene she refused additional medical attention.

Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
