A report of an accident shortly after school dismissed Friday resulted in multiple units being dispatched to the 2000 block of North SR 3.
“As I approached the hill the car came over the top airborne. I honestly feel that if I had not been paying attention and got over as far to the side as I could we would have collided head on,” David Newman said.
Newman, 23, of Arlington, was westbound on CR 200N when, as he approached a small hill, his 1997 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck nearly collided with a westbound 2002 Ford Taurus driven by Douglas A. McConnell of Rushville.
McConnell’s vehicle struck the side mirror of Newman’s vehicle prior to leaving the south side of the county road.
According to investigating officer deputy Dave Sliger of the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, in his effort to regain control of his vehicle the teenage driver apparently over-corrected and the Ford crossed the center line before leaving the road on the north side and entering a wooded area.
“I looked in my mirror and saw the car go into the woods then come out with a small tree caught attached to the car,” Newman said.
“The driver of the Ford Taurus was restricted on his license to glasses or contacts to which he stated he was not wearing either at the time of the accident,” Sliger said.
The deputy continued by saying that the speed of the vehicle may also have been a contributing factor to the accident.
McConnell and Newman were uninjured although a front seat passenger in McConnell’s vehicle, 17-year-old Joe Roberts of Rushville sustained what were described as minor injuries.
