2009 RCHS graduates challenged to soar

Twelve years of homework, challenges, growth and friendships came full circle and, in some cases with a few tears, as the 2009 graduating class of Rushville Consolidated High School walked out of Memorial Gymnasium Sunday afternoon to begin the next chapter of their lives.

“I did this for me, but it couldn’t be done without all of you,” class Salutatorian Kathryn Walke said to her classmates.

One by one classmates walked in front of their peers, family and friends to accept a handshake and diploma from Rush County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Williams and other RCS board members.

The 148 classmates met for the last time as high school students as they prepared for the various directions their lives will take them.

Class president Denise Amos class, vice-president Jessica Neeb, secretary Jessica Cole, treasurer C.J. West, Walke and class Valedictorian Amy Bare and Barry Swigart (who read the class poem) delivered short speeches or spoke of events and those individuals and educators that were instrumental in their education and influenced their years in the halls of RCHS.

“Our choices in life have only just began. Remember these moments, remember your family and remember your friends,” Amos said.

Those sentiments were echoed by Williams, who encouraged the young adults to seek their own answers to life’s challenges and questions. He also challenged them to seek and reach higher in the years ahead.

“I challenge you to spread your wings, look to the horizons and fly,” Williams said.

According to principal Matt Vance, something new was added to this year’s graduation event; for the first time students chose three teachers to read the names of graduating students. The chosen educators were Language Arts teachers Keith Perin, Jennie Tague and Jan Thoman.
