Ohio woman air-lifted following accident

A report of a two-vehicle injury accident shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday resulted in multiple responding units converging at the intersection of SR 244 and CR 450E.

Once on the scene they found a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck facing west on the north side of the intersection of the two roads and an extensively damaged 2008 Toyota Highlander where it came to rest after rolling in a nearby field.

Investigating officer deputy Duane Raab of the Rush County Sheriff’s Department said the Toyota, driven by Laura B. Hargitt-Cohen, 51, of Oxford, Ohio, was westbound on SR 244 when, as it approached CR 450E, the northbound Ford driven by Thomas Wood, 57, of Greensburg, for unknown reasons pulled out into the path of Cohen’s vehicle.

“The Toyota was basically T-boned in the driver’s side door. After impact, the vehicle left the north side of the road and entered a steep side ditch. The SUV went through a fence and rolled once before coming to rest upright,” deputy Mark Click said at the scene.

As a result of her injuries, Hargitt-Cohen was treated at the scene by medical personnel prior to transport to Rush Memorial Hospital and a waiting Air Evac air-ambulance for transport to an Indianapolis trauma center. The full extent of her injures were unknown at press time Monday.

Wood was not injured in the collision and refused treatment at the scene.

“I just got hit by the air bag deploying on my forehead, other than that I’m all right. But this is not a good start to my day,” Wood said.

Wood was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Both drivers were properly restrained in their vehicles. Driver-side and passenger -side air bags in the Toyota deployed when the vehicle rolled and responders are confident they had a direct impact on reducing the Ohio woman’s injuries.

Responding to the accident were units from the RCSD, Indiana State Police, Milroy Ambulance Service, RMH Ambulance, Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Gates Towing and Davis Towing.
