INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana health officials are warning that heavy rainfall this spring could bring more mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus.
Marion County Health Department biologist Jim Erwin says mosquitoes are breeding at three to five times the normal rate. He says the heavy rainfall has produced “standing water everywhere,” giving mosquitoes more opportunities to lay their eggs.
Officials are advising people to avoid being outside during prime mosquito-biting times, from dusk to dawn, and to wear pants, long-sleeved shirts and insect repellant when outside.
