RUSHVILLE —
An personal injury accident was reported to the Rush County Sheriff’s Department shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. The caller advised that the accident occurred on SR 244 just east of Milroy.
The call resulted in multiple emergency units responding to the area of CR 100E.
Terry Drake of the RCSD said the driver, Rachel M. Hetteshimer, 20, of Indianapolis, was a very fortunate woman to have escaped more serious injury.
Hetteshimer was eastbound when she swerved to miss an animal in the roadway.
“The driver said that she could not veer to the left as a result of oncoming traffic so she swerved to the right, causing the vehicle to enter a side ditch of the shoulderless road,” the deputy said.
Unable to correct the vehicle and return to the rural road, Hetteshimer’s 2011 Kia Soul traveled more than 40 yards before striking a concrete culvert.
“The force of the impact tore off the oil pan of the vehicle, causing the car to become airborne, and due to friction a fire broke out,” Drake said.
While airborne, the car next struck and severed a Verizon telecommunication pole nearly six feet above ground. After landing the Kia rolled four times before coming to rest on its driver’s side nearly 300 feet from where it initially left the road.
The investigation found that the Indianapolis woman was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash which reduced the severity of her injuries.
Prior to emergency responders arrival the driver was able to remove herself from the inverted vehicle.
Following treatment at the scene by medical personnel from Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department and RMH Ambulance, Hetteshimer was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital for unspecified injuries.
Phone lines downed as a result of the accident covered the highway and forced the closure of a one-mile stretch of SR 244 between Milroy and Richland for nearly two hours until the communication pole was replaced.
