Commissioners tend to county business

RUSHVILLE — Rush County Commissioners Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters met Monday.

Rush County Highway Superintendent Jerry Sitton gave his monthly report.

It was noted that although the county had a couple of snow events during the month of February and in early March, the cost of operating the department did not show a substantial increase in overtime hours for employees.

In unrelated business, the county leaders reviewed emergency medical services (EMS) run reports from three of the county EMS providers for the month of February.

Carthage made seven medical runs, Raleigh  responded to five medical assistance calls and RMH was dispatched to 81 calls during the month.

Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood was next up and said that for the first time this year the jail inmate count was below 40, with the jail currently housing 38 prisoners.

The sheriff next turned his attention to jail escapee Tony R. Shreve.

Shreve walked away from the RCJ the morning of February 16 while participating in a brief work detail with other jail inmate workers. It is alleged that the escape was facilitated by the assistance  of Amie Dawn Hernandez, 24, of Shelbyville.

The vehicle used in the escape recently was retrieved by Sherwood, who said at Monday’s commissioner meeting that jail commissary funds were used to retrieve the vehicle from South Carolina and that no local tax dollars were used.

A final matter regarding the painting of the stairwells at the county courthouse was addressed.

The county has received one bid for the work in question and tabled the matter until at least one additional quote is received. Commissioner Mark Bacon said the maintenance issue will be addressed at a future meeting, as will a request to purchase additional maintenance materials.

Wickard, State Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Indiana announced FSA is currently conducting Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signups for both general and continuous CRP. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.
