As a winter storm bears down on the Midwest bringing with it the possibility for multiple inches of snow, it is important to remember that road conditions may change drastically in a relatively short period of time.
Local and county law enforcement personnel want to stress that motorists should use extreme caution when driving this time of year as visibility and driving conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Posted speed limit signs are for driving during optimum weather conditions.
As road conditions deteriorate drivers should reduce their speed and drive cautiously, especially on county roads, while crossing over bridges or overpasses, and around curves.
According to law enforcement personnel, the most common factor in accidents during winter months is that motorists are driving too fast for existing road conditions.
If you feel your vehicle lose traction and begin to slide you should remove your foot from the gas pedal and steer in the direction of the slide — avoid using the brake.
Rush County currently has a travel and road advisory plan in place. The four stage road and travel advisory is the same that is used by state officials.
Caution — A condition may develop that limits or hinders travel or activities in isolated areas. No travel restrictions have been reported but citizens should be alert to changing conditions.
Level 3 — Routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation; citizens should use caution or avoid these areas. Schools and businesses may begin to implement their emergency plans.
Level 2 — Conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel is recommended (i.e. to and from work, emergency situations etc.). Emergency action plans have been or should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies and other organizations.
Level 1 — A state of emergency has been declared by the county commissioners. Travel may be restricted to emergency personnel only.

Do not call local law enforcement agencies or the ISP for road conditions; it is important that those phone lines remain open for emergency calls.
