RUSHVILLE —
During Monday’s meeting of the Rush County Commissioners a second public hearing regarding a request to close CR 900S south of Milroy was held. The petition requesting closure of the road cited concerns that it was used as an illegal dumping site.
After hearing from a number of individuals the county leaders voted to deny the request for closure. It was also decided that the county would place additional signage at both ends of the road that crosses Little Flatrock River and intersects with CR 175W southwest of Milroy.
In other matters, the commissioners signed a contract with Purdue Extension. The agreement is responsible for the salaries of employees Kristie Amos and Gracie Marlatt.
Next to speak was Clean Green Rush Director Carole Yeend. She told the commissioners that Saturday’s tox-away day was a success. For the first time in a number of years, tires were accepted at no charge.
“We had 77 visitors and collected 2,500 tires, 400 of which were the large tractor tires,” Yeend said.
She continued by saying that volunteer help is needed to load the tires collected. She is hoping that some service groups or others would step up and assist. Yeend can be contacted by calling (765) 938-1342.
Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood was next to speak and said the inmate population at the local jail has not changed much in recent weeks. According to Sherwood, 44 individuals are being held in the facility and 32 of those incarcerated are facing felony charges with 16 charged with either a A, B or C felony counts.
In an unrelated matter, the commissioners asked that Sherwood check the budget at the RCSD for additional funding to assist with payment for the inter-local animal control agreement that went into effect in June.
At that time it was decided that the city and county combine their animal control efforts through a four-year agreement. It was determined at that time that $85,000 is required annually to operate the animal shelter and the county leaders asked that Sherwood locate $6,000 for the joint agreement.
Prior to the June agreement the county animal control officer worked out of the sheriff department. Once the agreement was signed, the county transferred ownership of the county-owned animal control vehicle to the city and no longer maintains an animal control officer.

FSA announces restart of America’s largest conservation program
Julia A. Wickard, State Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Indiana announced FSA is currently conducting Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signups for both general and continuous CRP. The General Signup began yesterday, May 20, 2013, and continues through June 14. Sign-up for continuous CRP began on May 13 and will continue through Sept. 30, 2013.

County beefs up computer security
During the most recent meeting of the Rush County Commissioners, Rush Count Sheriff Jeff Sherwood informed Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters that the inmate population at the Rush County Jail continues to increase. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.
