RUSHVILLE —
The evening of May 28, deputies from the Rush County Sheriff's Department along with medical and fire personnel from the Manilla Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene of a dirt bike accident in a field in the 7100 of CR 250S, near Homer.
The caller reported that a friend had crashed his dirt bike and was complaining of no feeling in his lower extremities. The injured individual was identified as Tanner Hall, 15, a Rushville Consolidated High School freshman.
According to the incident report at the RCSD, at the time of the accident Hall was wearing all of the proper safety equipment including a helmet; he and friends were riding on unfamiliar farm ground.
After cresting a hill at a high rate of speed his bike went airborne, dislodging its rider. Hall was thrown into a stone bridge foundation, striking the concrete foundation with the back of his helmet.
The force of the impact caused his T4 vertebra to be crushed and dislocated.
Following treatment at the scene the teen was transferred to a waiting AirEvac helicopter and transported to an Indianapolis trauma center.
At present, the teen is paralyzed. According to his mother, Shelly, Tanner has had one surgery to stabilize his spine.
"Currently, Tanner's spirits are high and he is in a rehab center. He is working really hard, and although we don't now what to expect in the long-term we are hopeful," Shelly Hall said Friday.
It is anticipated that Tanner will return home the first week of July. Once back in Rush County he will continue rehab on an outpatient basis.
"Once he completes his rehab, although in a wheel chair, he will be totally independent," his mother said.
Shelly continued by saying that her son is grateful for all of the well wishes he has received and is looking forward to getting home.
Card and letters can be sent to Hall at R.H.I., 4141 Shore Drive, Room 210, Indianapolis, IN 46254.
