The Rush County Commissioners met this week and heard from APC Director Bill Todd regarding approaching changes in wood burning stoves.
Many Hoosier and Rush County residents have turned to wood burning stoves to heat their homes during the winter months. Indiana legislators have approved changes in wood burning stoves that will go into effect July 1.
According to Todd, in roughly six weeks the height of stacks exiting the stoves will be limited to 22 feet; however, inside city limits the stacks must be at least five feet higher that the nearest residence.
It was noted that most residences are at least 35 feet in height and that the 22 foot maximum height is in conflict with the new legislation.
Commissioner Tom Barnes questioned the wording of the new requirements and asked Todd to research the changes and report back to the county leaders.
In other matters, Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood said that the inmate count at the Rush County Jail is around 40 individuals on a daily basis.
The facility currently houses 38, with four individuals serving court mandated sentences. He also informed the county leaders that the annual state jail inspection will be held later this week.

Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
In an update to this story, the City announced plans today to open Waggener Community Pool earlier than originally planned due to expected high temperatures over Memorial Weekend.
