Chase leads to arrest of K-town man

RUSHVILLE — What began as a routine traffic stop on a rural road turned into anything but routine for Rush County deputy sheriff Terry Drake Monday evening.

Events unfolded shortly before 6:30 p.m. when Drake was patrolling Carthage Pike; he observed a vehicle with faulty equipment and attempted to stop it.

The driver had no intentions of stopping and took off at a high rate of speed.

While giving chase, the deputy maintained radio contact with the RCSD dispatch center and responding units and advised that an infant and a passenger were also in the fleeing car.

As speeds exceeded 80 mph, the car continued traveling west in the northern part of Rush County as other officers began to converge on the area.

As sunlight began to diminish, the fleeing vehicle stopped and then abruptly sped off again. A short time later the vehicle entered Hancock County. Deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department placed stop sticks on the road, causing the fleeing vehicle’s tires to deflate as it turned onto U.S. 40 near CR 500E in Hancock County.

The vehicle came to a stop in a residential driveway.

Officers ordered the driver, later identified as Christopher Dean Wayman, 22, of Knightstown, out of his incapacitated vehicle.

The female passenger was questioned and later released.

The Department of Children Services was contacted in regards to the child, who was properly restrained inside the vehicle during the pursuit.

It was learned Tuesday that during the chase the unidentified 21-year-old female passenger was in cell phone contact with the HCSD while pleading with Wayman to stop the vehicle.

Wayman was wanted on an unspecified warrant. In addition, he received 18 citations, including felony charges, following the pursuit.

The Knightstown man was charged with resisting law enforcement, neglect of a dependent child, criminal recklessness and criminal confinement. A bond of $30,000 was set.
