Child safety a priority for RPD

Seat inspection set for Feb. 8

RUSHVILLE — Three years ago the Rushville Police Department first embarked on a safety measure aimed at young passengers in vehicles by training officers in the proper installation of infant and booster seats in vehicles.

At that time, RPD officer Michael Ervin headed the program to make child safety a priority for every child riding in a vehicle. That thought is still a priority for Ervin and the RPD. Recently, a number of others at the local law enforcement department completed training in the proper way to install car and booster seats.

According to Ervine, the idea is to protect the lives of Rush County children and those of all Hoosiers.

The officer continued by saying that infant car seats and booster seats for older children are often improperly secured in vehicles and that leads to potentially dangerous situations in the event of a car accident.

“Most times when we check on infant or car seats we find that they’re not properly installed. Now we will be able to provide a means to help and assist parents and caregivers to insure their children are properly secured in a vehicle,” Ervin said.

The one-day inspection will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the RPD, 270 West 15th Street.

There is no charge for the inspection and it is hoped that new or expecting parents will take advantage of the event.

Officers will continue to assist residents with installations on an appointment basis, while the upcoming event is this year’s signature event for child safety.
