RUSHVILLE —
Thomas Lee Gettinger, 76, of Connersville, died unexpectedly Monday morning, February 13, 2012 at his residence in Fayette County.
Tom was born August 6, 1935 on the family farm, where he still resides, one of eight children blessed to Guy and Ruby Strong Gettinger of Connersville. He graduated from Alquina High School in 1953 and on November 22, 1958, he married Carol Dian McNew of Brownsville.
Tom served with the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 (4th Tank Division); returning to Fayette County upon his honorable discharge, he was a life-long farmer and was also employed with Roots Blower from 1956 through 1976 and Mac Machine and Metal Works from 1985 until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of Alquina United Methodist Church. In his leisure, Tom enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in a variety of youth sports. He also supported the Fayette County 4-H Program in which many family members participated.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Carol, and his four children, Russell Lee "Rusty" Gettinger and his wife Sherri of Connersville, Karen Oldham and her husband Jon Andrew "Andy" of Greenfield, Indiana, Tom "Gene" Gettinger of Connersville and Heather Flanigan and her husband Brian of Connersville, ten grandchildren, Brittany Gossett and her husband Ben , Jonathon Gettinger, Zachary and Shelby Oldham, Tom Gettinger, Fancee Congelton, Austin Flanigan and his wife Emily, Samantha, Bailey and Parker Flanigan; he was also blessed with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Raymond, Ben, John and Dan Gettinger, and three sisters, Mary Smiley, Martha Hollowell and Norma Cullison.
Funeral services will be conducted at Alquina United Methodist Church at 1 PM, February 18, 2012, Rev. Ben Dillworth and Rev. Carole Wiley, officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery at Lyonsville with military rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council.
