Ward “Smitty” Smith, 78

RUSHVILLE — Ward “Smitty” Smith, 78, of Arlington, passed away March 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Elnora to Beecher and Louise (Hoese) Smith. He was a 1952 graduate of Arsenal Tech High School.

Smitty joined the US Navy in the fall of 1952 where he served on the USS Newport News. He also served in the Indiana National Guard. Smitty married Jeanette Dortch May 3, 1995; she survives.

He retired from Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis after 30 years. Smitty was a member of Arlington Christian Church, UAW Local #1111, and was a former member of the Indianapolis Masonic Lodge F&AM.

In addition to his wife, Jeanette, of Arlington, he is survived by sons, Michael Smith of Georgia, Chris Smith of Greenwood and John Smith of St. Paul; a daughter, Jana and husband Matt Waldon of Greenwood; a step son, James Dortch of Cumberland; a step daughter, Debbie and husband Jim Atwell of Noblesville; a sister, Mary Jo Gluff of Florida; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Justin and Andy.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15 at Arlington Christian Church in Rush County. Friends are welcome to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Moster Mortuary, Rushville. The Rush County Veteran’s Honor Guard will provide military rites at the church Friday. Bob Brock will preside.  

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Vincent de Paul, Arlington Christian Church or Decatur County Hospice.
