Harold Leon McConkey, 94

RUSHVILLE — Harold Leon McConkey, 94, of Laurel, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Fayette Regional Health Systems. He had been a resident at Hickory Creek Nursing Home for more than a year and a half.

The youngest of five children, he was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Walter and Olive Mae Brown McConkey. He was a 1941 graduate of The Ohio State University, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education; later, he attended other graduate courses at Purdue University and, while serving in the US Army during the Second World War, he took landscaping studies in London, England.

During World War II, he served with the US Army, was involved in the European Theater and fought in the Battle of the Bulge; he received a bronze star and other commendations.

On September 21, 1943, he married Marjorie Watts of Cambellstown, Ohio, where he subsequently taught agricultural courses in several Preble County, Ohio high schools; upon moving to Indiana, he worked in soil and water conservation and taught in several elementary schools, including Milroy and Laurel. Later, he was employed with Rush County REMC. Mrs. McConkey died August, 1990.

On May 5, 1991, he married Mary Ann Hornsby Jackson of Laurel; Mrs. McConkey survives.

A member of Laurel Church of Christ, where he led singing (he directed the choir and taught Sunday School in other congregations), along with his wife Mary Ann, he enjoyed traveling, especially to the Holy Land and Egypt where they saw the pyramids. In his leisure, he enjoyed playing basketball and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. He also liked croquet and was a good pool hustler.

Survivors, besides his wife, include four daughters, Carita Davison and her husband Charles of Colorado Springs, Colo., Marla Simpkins and her husband David of Connersville, Janet Sinks and her husband Ted of Delaware, Ohio, and Janel Isaacs and her husband Larry of Zionsville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step children, Pat Combs and her husband Joe of Laurel and Lindsay Jackson and his wife Melody of Brookville; five step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his first wife, Marjorie, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Esther Heizer; three brothers, Elmer, Robert and Floyd McConkey.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home with David Humphrey officiating. Burial with military rites will be conducted at Richland Cemetery, Richland. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; they may also visit anytime online at millermosterrobbins.com.

Memorial contributions may be to the funeral home and routed to the American Legion Post #1 Cemetery Flag Fund.
