RUSHVILLE —
John T. Ketchum, 85, a lifelong Rushville resident, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 in Greensburg.
He was born Jan. 8, 1927 in Rushville to Wooden Curtis and Stella (Snider Perry) Ketchum. He married Evelyn Nixon Nov. 16, 1952; she preceded him in death Oct. 20, 2010.
John was drafted into the US Army during World War II. He served in Japan with Company B 184th infantry. After returning to Rushville following the service, John graduated from Rushville High School in 1948.
He had quite a work ethic, never missing one day of work because of sickness. John delivered newspapers in Rushville as a boy, acquired top salesman status selling US War Bonds and for 30 years he delivered milk for Barnett’s Hoosier Dairy on a residential milk route in Rushville. He later worked at Dana Corporation in Rushville and Indiana Gear Works in Indianapolis. He was a parts runner for Rodefeld’s Napa before he finally retired.
John was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Rushville where he had been a member for over 40 years. He was a member of Rushville American Legion Post #150. He took great pride in never getting any kind of traffic citation or having any kind of run in with the law. John had a very gentle nature and was very much a people person.
He is survived by his sons, John W. and wife Ricki Ketchum of Shelbyville, Kenny and wife Vanessa Ketchum of Rushville and Steve Ketchum and companion Amanda of Rushville; daughters, Rhonda and husband Allen Cohee of Rushville and Faith and husband Randy Sizemore of Connersville; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by brothers, infant baby Jim, Ben, Loren, Bill, Bob and Charles; sisters, Louise and Edna; and half sister, Leota McIllwain.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 at First Baptist Church in Rushville where friends are welcome to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2. Pastor Phil Hodgkins will preside. Burial will be in Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery. The Rush County Veteran’s Honor Guard will provide military rites.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s research.
