Johnny Ray Tompkins, 66

RUSHVILLE — Johnny Ray Tompkins, 66, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at his home in Rushville. He was born Aug. 30, 1946, to Rebecca Belle (Bryan) and John Marcus Tompkins in Lexington, Ky.

He attended Knightstown and then Mays High School and graduated in 1966. During his high school years he worked at Patton’s Grocery in Knightstown. He was in the US Army for three years and served in Vietnam in l967.

Johnny married Mary Springman Feb. 17, 2006; she survives. He also worked for county highway departments, state highway departments, Indiana Fire Apparatus, Trane Co., Arrow Gas and the Indiana Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Childrens’ Home, retiring from there in 2003. He was a member of Center Christian Church, life member of VFW, member of the American Legion at Knightstown and Rushville, and a member of the Eagles and Eagles Rider of Rushville. He was a past member of the Mays Lions Club, Carthage Masonic Lodge, Mays/Raleigh Volunteer Fire Department, youth leader and bus driver for Center Christian Church, and a Boy Scout Leader.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Springman) Tompkins of Rushville; sons, Johnny Edward Tompkins (wife, Dana) Tompkins and Steven Scott Tompkins (friend, Moreen Edwards); grandsons, Cody, Colt and Skyler of West Plains, Mo.; granddaughter, Jolie Tompkins of New Castle; sister, Sharon (Gary) Evans of Rushville; brothers, Marshall (Sue) Tompkins of Carthage, Larry (Debbie) Tompkins of Rushville, Michael (Wanda) Tompkins of Morristown, Mark (Sheri) Tompkins and Bill (Teresa) Tompkins of the Mays area; friend, Jim Arnold of Rushville; step sons, Danny Mourey (wife, Ellen) of Michigan and Frank Mourey (wife, Melissa) of Greensburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth (Tompkins) Foley and her husband, Al Foley; and step daughters, Drenda and Gina.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Moster Mortuary, Rushville, where friends are welcome to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Pastor Danny Shelton will preside. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville. Military rites will be provided by the Rush County Veterans Honor Guard. Raleigh Fire Department will provide an honor guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rush County Veterans Honor Guard.
