Mauzy: County food pantry defines essence of community spirit
In a somewhat overlooked portion of Rush County, gatherings of capable hands work together for a greater cause of serving a community. While it is common to assume that the term “community” refers to an immediate township or closest vicinity, the efforts of an organization situated in the town of Carthage reach far beyond its boundaries to serve residents across the county, including 200 households in Rushville Township alone.

Remembering an old friend
Dear Editor:
The Mike Lacy I knew was a man who lived in the past. We only spent time with each other a few years, in high school and for a few years after. Messer: Control spending sensibly
When it comes to the sequester, President Obama is putting politics first. The President claims that sequester cuts would be “draconian,” creating major disruptions in everything from air travel to public safety to food inspections.

Economy calls for caution
Dear Editor:
Few Hoosiers read the financial pages because the information presented seems complex, pessimistic, or occasionally too optimistic. -
Barada: Opportunity School is a great idea
A recent news release appeared in this paper that could have far reaching educational benefits for young people in Rush County.

Barada: Recalling the Battle of Iwo Jima
Just a little over 68 years ago, on Feb. 19, 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima began and lasted for the next 36 days, until March 26, 1945.
