RUSHVILLE — Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is an International Honor Society which recognizes individuals that have excelled and had outstanding academic achievements. During the Nov. 20 meeting, Rushville resident Lisa Williams was inducted as a member of the Alpha Upsilon Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Memberships are lifetime with lifetime benefits, including the honor seal affixed to a college degree.

Williams was recognized during Ivy Tech Community College Richmond’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa induction of 28 students. Ivy Tech-Richmond Chancellor Steven Tincher was the keynote speaker.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918. It is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2.5 million members inducted since 1918. There are 1,275 chapters in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, U.S. territorial possessions and Peru. Students must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework that apply to an associate degree and have a 3.5 grade point average to be invited to membership.

The honor recognizes and encourages academic achievement of two-year students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programs.

Chapter Adviser Valerie Ray said, “Membership helps members grow as scholars and servant leaders. The members have access to significant scholarships, resources and life skills training that help them succeed as students and productive, civically-engaged citizens. Membership also helps students win scholarships and acquire leadership, critical thinking and organizational skills sought by prospective employers.
