Extension Homemakers celebrate 100 years: Friendly Homemakers Club

RUSHVILLE — Extension Homemakers around the Hoosier state are celebrating 100 years of service. Each publication between now and the anniversary, April 7, 2013, we are featuring memories, stories and tributes to the many accomplishments and members involved throughout the years. Have you been a member or was a mother or grandmother a member in the past. Become involved again in making new memories by calling Gracie Marlatt at the Extension office at: 932-5974. The local celebration will begin at 2 p.m. April 7 at the Root Building at the Rush County Fairgrounds. Everyone is welcome.

Today, we’re pleased to shine the spotlight on the Friendly Homemakers Club of Rush County.

The Friendly Homemakers Club of Rushville Township was organized March 13, 1938, at the home of Mrs. Hal Green.

There were 17 members and three guests present. By 1940, they had 40 members.

Today, there are 12 members who range in age from 72 to 90 years old. They donate to Mental Health Gift Lift, cookies for bike-a-thon, BPW Reality Store, Salvation Army, local book bank, and cookies for nursing homes.

To make money for projects, they have an occasional “white elephant sale,” birthday pennies, and selling pecans to family and friends. They enjoy eating out sometimes, followed by a tour or shopping.
