RUSHVILLE —
Ruth Houk, along with her children Melissa Porter and Rodney Houk, recently established a new designated scholarship endowment at the Rush County Community Foundation in memory of their late husband and father, Bill.
The “Ruth and Bill Houk Scholarship Fund” was established to assist a graduating senior of Rushville Consolidated High School who plans to enter the teaching profession. The recipient must show proof of acceptance at an accredited college or university and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale.
“Melissa and I wanted to honor both of our parents” stated Rod. “They both taught in Rush County for many years and we felt this was a way of honoring and remembering them.”
“It’s been touching to read the stories of the impact our parents had on so many students throughout the years. It is only fitting that we do our part to help build the next generation of teachers, who will in turn inspire their students,” added Melissa.
“Our family has been impressed with the other scholarships and funds that have been established and administered through the Foundation,” stated Ruth. “They benefit our community in so many ways.”
“Bill taught my senior government class and Ruth taught both of my children at Milroy Elementary so it was indeed a pleasure and honor to work with Ruth and her children in establishing this scholarship,” stated Garry Cooley, Foundation executive director. “On behalf of the Foundation and our Board of Directors I want to thank Ruth, Melissa and Rod for establishing this scholarship. This scholarship will link Ruth and Bill’s names to the Foundation and the Rush County community not only today, but for our future generations. Their generosity will live on as this fund provides scholarships forever to assist an RCHS graduating senior in achieving their educational goal of entering the teaching profession.”
