Ford power wins at Mt. Lawn

Jason Atkinson of New Castle, driving the only Ford powered racer in the field, won the Motion Motors Late Model feature Saturday night at the Mt. Lawn Speedway west of New Castle.

Atkinson started ninth and took the lead from Terry Cater of New Castle on Lap 22 of the caution free 30-lap event. Miles Sexton started on the outside of row one and took the lead on Lap 1 only to be black flagged for dumping fuel on the race track.

Bill Clark of Rushville led Lap 2 when Cater took over the lead on Lap 3 and led the next 18 laps. Atkinson disposed of his competition as he passed Knepley for seventh on Lap 2, got sixth when Sexton went to the pits, fifth when Clark was sidelined on Lap 5, fourth when he got around Randy Anderson of Knightstown on Lap 6, and third on Lap 8 when he got Dean Baker of Modoc.

Atkinson then passed LJ Lines of Lewisville for second on Lap 16 and took the lead for good from Cater on Lap 21.

Cater finished second followed by Tail Gunner Challenge driver Eric Evans of Greenfield, Lines, Knepley, Jeff Marcum of Morristown, Baker, Chad White of Greenfield, Anderson and Johnny Fugate of Cambridge City.

Evans set fast time at 16.547. Knepley won the Razzles Dash for Cash while Lines and Anderson won the heats.

Another caution free 30-lap feature saw Ryan Amonett of New Castle and Tony Stewart of Straughn battle side by side over the final 10 laps with Amonett picking up the victory in the Dependable Drywall Thunder Car division.

Jason Walker of Sulphur Springs took the lead of the feature on Lap 1 and led the first six laps when Stewart got around for the lead on Lap 7. Amonett moved into second on Lap 11 and began to reel in Stewart who had built a sizable lead at that point. Stewart got slowed on laps 15 through 17 while trying to put Jim Walker of Cambridge City a lap down.

Walker did go a lap down on Lap 18 but the big lead Stewart had was now gone with Amonett right on his bumper. Amonett pulled inside of Stewart on Lap 19 and the two battled side by side the rest of the way.

While the Amonett/Stewart duel was unfolding fast qualifier Jameson Owens of Greenfield (18.427) moved to third and was hoping for a tangle between the leaders the never happened. Owens finished third followed by Jason Walker, Frankie Oakes of Cambridge City, and Ed Knott of Muncie. Alan Lambert of Cambridge City, Cody Walker of Sulphur Springs, Jim Walker and Adam Bolyard of Rushville.

Cody Walker had his engine let go exiting the short turn on the final lap of the race. Amonett won the Dependable Drywall Dash for Cash with Stewart and Jim Walker winning the heats.

Brad McMahon of Indianapolis won the MC Auto Repair Hornet feature in only his second attempt at Mt. Lawn’s tricky oval. Kim Lawrence led Lap 1 when John Massengale moved to the front and led the next seven laps. McMahon got around Massengale on Lap 9 and led the rest of the way getting a strong challenge at the end from point leader Joyce Dyer of Greenfield.

Dyer did finish second followed by Kyle Evans of Greenfield, Brian Reynolds of Mooreland, Jerry Small of Arcadia, Massengale, Eric Shell of Anderson, Lawrence, Josh White of Indianapolis and Chase Lane of Knightstown.

Evans set fast time at 19.661. Reynolds won the MC Auto Repair Dash for Cash and the first heat while Lawrence won the second heat.

Josh McQueary of Middletown continued his winning ways in the Indy FastKarts leading all but two laps of the 20-lap feature.

Rex Timmons of Avon finished second followed by Ryan Fredrick of Indianapolis, John Wilson of Brownsburg, Ashley Allen of Indy, Daniel Pierce of New Castle, Jerry Small, Chad Timmons of Avon, Josh Sutter of Brownsburg and Larry Keene of Brownsburg. McQueary and Allen won the heats.
