CONNERSVILLE - The host Spartans of Connersville claimed the hardware at the tennis sectional on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Rushville.
The Lions picked up a win at No. 1 singles where Kyle Hoeing won in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Hoeing advances in the individual singles sectional at Richmond.
At No. 2 singles, John Riddell fell 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Jake Fowler lost 6-4, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Brayton Wood and Austin Niehoff lost 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Paul Hershberger and Brandon Slaton lost 6-2, 6-1.
“This was our third go around with the Spartans this season each with a similar outcome. We were not able to gain any ground on the senior laden Spartans this year. Congratulations to a deserving sectional champ,” Coach Heuer said.
Lions 4, Wildcats 1
The Lions earned the right to play for the sectional title by knocking off Franklin County 4-1. Rushville avenged a regular season loss at the hands of the Wildcats by that same 4-1 score.
“We got a determined effort from each and every one of our kids tonight,” Coach Heuer said.
The Lions got their first point as Paul Hershberger and Brandon Slaton won the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 3 singles, Jake Fowler fell in a tight match 6-3, 6-3 to make it 1-1.
The Lions regained the lead as John Riddell rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the third set to win 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5.
At No. 1 singles, Kyle Hoeing won in two sets 7-5, 6-3.
