RUSHVILLE —
Jeff Marcum of Morristown took the Tail Gunner Challenge at Mt. Lawn Saturday night and went on to get the win and the extra $500 in cash. William Mefford of Knightstown started on the pole after Ryan Amonett of New Castle decided to move to the rear of the field because of problems he had in qualifications. Mefford led the first nine laps which saw a yellow for an accident between Amonett and Jim Logan of New Castle on lap 7. Amonett got into the rear of the Logan machine as the field was trying to put Logan a lap down. Amonett’s radiator was broken in the process and he was done for the evening. The next yellow flew on lap nine when Scott Knepley and Mefford got together in the short turn. Eric Evans of Greenfield assumed the top spot on lap 10 followed closely by Terry Cater of New Castle. Cater was attempting to get around Evans on lap 11 when he and Marcum collided in the short turn sending both cars to the pits. Marcum returned after quick fender repair to his mount but Cater did not. Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City then moved to second in hot pursuit of Evans. Mefford had moved back into third by lap 13 but once again he and Knepley got together as the two rubbed going down the backstretch giving Mefford a flat left front that ended his evening. Claborn finally caught Evans on lap 16 and the two battled side by side for the next 10 laps. Just as it appeared the Claborn was getting the upper hand he and Evans touched entering turn one on lap 26 sending Claborn hard into the first turn concrete. Claborn was done and Evans went to the tail for the restart. Marcum took over on lap 27 and went on to take the win. Knepley regrouped to finish second followed by Brandon Mefford of Knightstown, Evans, Joe Woodring of Muncie, Bill Pierce of New Castle, Claborn, William Mefford, Brock Anderson of Albany and Cater. Ralph Lane of Greensburg left the race on lap 9 with a flat and finished 11th, Amonett 12th and Logan bringing up the rear. Marcum set fast time at 16.545. Knepley won the Razzles Dash for Cash with Evans and William Mefford winning the heats. After winning 10 features in a row to start the 2010 season Neil Marcum of Morristown had to settle for second behind Kevin Claborn. Frankie Oakes of Cambridge City took the lead from the pole and led the first six laps. On lap 7 Jeff Marcum took over for one lap giving way to Claborn who led the rest of the way for the win. The yellow came out on lap 22 when Cody Walker of Sulphur Spring developed engine problems and came to a halt at the entrance to the pit area. That yellow allowed Neil Marcum to restart directly behind Claborn in third place with Brother Jeff in second. On lap 24 Neil moved to second but could not run down Claborn. The Marcum boys finished 2-3 followed by Adam Bolyard of Rushville, Andrew Walker of Sulphur Springs, Chris Bolyard of Rushville, Oakes, Mike Owens of New Castle, Cody Walker and Colby Lane of Knightstown. Jameson Owens of Greenfield dropped out on lap 17 and finished 11th. Claborn set fast time at 17.528, won the Thompson Builders Dash for Cash and the first heat with Cody Walker winning heat #2. After a week of disappointment when he lost a chance for victory on the last lap of the feature Jared Keller of Anderson finally got his first feature win at Mt Lawn in the MC Auto Repair Hornet division. Scott Kilgore of New Castle led lap one with Jeff Sorrell of New Castle taking over on lap two. Doug Sorrell took over on lap three and led then next 11 laps. On lap 14 Eric Evans making his first Hornet start took the lead with Keller moving into second on lap 15. Keller finally got around Evans on lap 18 as the pair dueled side by side for three laps. Evans finished second followed by Doug Sorrell, Josh Owens of New Castle, John Massengale of New Castle, Tail Gunner Jacob Wyman of Selma, Kilgore, Jeff Sorrell, Freddie Marlow of New Castle and Chase Lane of Knightstown. Keller set fast time at 19.586 and won the MC Auto Repair Dash for Cash. The heats went to Ryan Morefield of Cambridge City, Joseph Jennings of Richmond and Chase Lane. Scott Razor of New Castle outlasted 11 Street Drag competitors to beat Eric Bailey of New Castle in the finals. In the family feud match race between John and Karol Massengale of New Castle it was determined, in the interest of fairness, John who has been racing for three years would have to make a pit stop at the half way point of their eight lap match. At lap four John held a lead on Karol and then headed for the pit area. When John returned to the track after a quick stop and go pit stop Karol was long gone. John was closing at the end but needed a few more laps to catch Karol. Next week a special Powder Puff will be held with ladies only racing in a Hornet or Thunder Car.Sports
