City tourney time at the lanes

RUSHVILLE — Hello everybody! This is Jim Ephlin, from the Rushville Bowl, where all the action is. Action is right around the corner as we are ready to roll with the 73rd Annual City Championships.

For nine days, Feb. 16 - Feb. 24, bowlers will be trying to throw their best shots and try to capture one of the 10 titles up for grabs. The deal about the city tournament is “Who is going to have that career day or night?” Sure some of our best bowlers are expected to do well and often do, but there is always a “Cinderella” story of someone obscure putting it all together for three games.

Doubles and singles will be held this Saturday and Sunday with the Classic League rolling the first team scores on Monday the 18th. We have a late squad Wednesday night that more then a few good scores have come from. Each team event will have a ceremonial first ball thrown by a special guest or guests. Squad times and dates are currently posted at the center. I encourage every participant to check the schedule and confirm when you are to participate.

In March, the Rushville USBC BA in sponsorship with Todd Funeral Centre will present The Shootout tourney. This is a singles handicapped tournament for bowlers not participating in the King of the Hill tourney. Since only 16 bowlers can be in the King of the Hill that means the shootout is for the other 250 bowlers we have in our leagues. It is a tourney that features match play which is a type of bowling we get to do on very few occasions. The tournament carries a $25 entry fee which can be paid at any time. Bowlers can spend only $5 in league and enter a singles sweeper that has you bowling against only four other people and if you shoot the best score,you win an entry valued at $25.

The 2012-13 high school bowling season has ended with Rushville sending two bowlers to the regional in the state tournament. In regular conference action, the girls finished tied for third out of 10 schools with a 7-2 record. The boys team finished with a 8-6 record to finish sixth out of 13 schools. Samantha Woods and J.T. Ephlin bowled in the regional in Muncie but did not advance to semistate competition. The girls were coached by Jay Fields, Greg Gilbert and Robin Gilbert. Team members included Haley Rains, Morgan Haten, Brandi Graham, Jessica Schlechtweg, Jackie Bell and seniors Haylee Schweier and Samantha Woods. Boys team was made up of four sophomores, a junior and one senior. Sophomores were Dylan Kennedy, Patrick Duffy, Nick Hutchinson and J. T. Ephlin. Dylan Kennedy and the only senior Jacob Richardson complete the team.

Earlier in the column I mentioned the City Championships but that is not the only tournament our bowlers are preparing for. Just this past weekend we had 12 players bowl in Bloomington at the Indiana State Elks bowling tourney. George Maple is currently organizing local teams for the State Eagles tournament. Men and women bowlers alike will be going to the Indiana State Tournament. The ladies bowl in Kokomo while the men will be in Lafayette. (Tell Mike Ailby I said hello) We even have 10 bowlers going to Reno, Nevada to compete in the National Championships. I hope I have many good stories to talk about in future columns.

Fish size limit changes for Indiana Rivers
Indiana Conservation Officer’s would like to remind fishermen that the size limit for Black Bass changed last year on most Indiana Rivers excluding the Ohio River and its tributaries. Black bass is a term for largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.

CONNERSVILLE – After a season of ups and down and battling through injury and illness, the Lady Lion tennis team put it all together Saturday and captured the sectional title at Connersville.

Woods' walk-off lifts Lady Lions by Tigers
In the final tune-up before the softball sectional, the Lady Lions got a walk-off home run by Shelby Woods to edge Hagerstown 1-0. The Lady Lions complete the regular season at 9-10.

Lions second in track sectional
CONNERSVILLE – The host Spartans of Connersville ended the 2-year run for Rushville as track sectional champions. Connersville tallied 150 points to claim the sectional crown. The Lions finished second with 130 followed by Richmond 125, Centerville 54, Cambridge City Lincoln 47, Franklin County 35, Hagerstown 25, Union County 23, Northeastern 21, Tri 7 and Oldenburg Academy 3.

Lions drop two to Dragons on Senior Night
The Lions celebrated Senior Night for 10 players – James Brashaber, Brian Busald, Mark Busald, Mike Busald, Kyle Hoeing, Austin Maggard, Austin Niehoff, Hunter Orme, John Riddell and Matthew Wagoner – before face HHC foe New Palestine Friday. The visiting Dragons were able to sweep the doubleheader from the Lions.

Lions outlast Spartans 9-8
Connersville and Rushville scored a combined 17 runs through four innings. The Lions then shut down the Spartans offense the final three innings to take the 9-8 victory.

NEW CASTLE - The Lion golf team traveled to Westwood Country Club to face the New Castle Trojans. In varsity action, the Lions fell to the Trojans 163-183.

Lady Lions third at track sectional
CONNERSVILLE – The Lady Lion track team traveled to Connersville for the IHSAA track sectional. The host Lady Spartans won the team title with 127 points. Hagerstown was second with 98 followed by Rushville with 94.5.
Union County finished fourth with 85 followed by Richmond 62, Cambridge City Lincoln 56, Centerville 46, Seton Catholic 23, Tri 12.5 and Northeastern 11.
