Lady Lions fall in title game

RUSHVILLE — RICHMOND - The Lady Lions soccer team battled to a victory over Richmond 3-0 in the sectional semifinal to reach the sectional title game. New Castle proved to be too much for the Lady Lions as the Lady Trojans claimed the sectional crown 5-0.

In the semifinal win over Richmond, senior Mikayla Dougherty got the scoring started on a penalty kick midway through the first half.

Rushville took a 2-0 lead as Caroline Kuhn found the net with just :16 left in the half.

At the 25:12 mark of the second half, the Lady Lions put the game away as Kuhn scored on a fast break down the right side to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead and eventual victory.

Rushville keeper Nici Martin had seven saves and the Lady Lions took 16 shots with Kuhn having seven followed by Taylor Gilbert four, Dougherty three, Abbey Whitaker one and Kaley Flannery one.

The victory sent the Lady Lions into the title game against a strong New Castle team.

Early in the first half, New Castle’s Olivia Malott found the goal for a 1-0 lead. A penalty kick by Malott pushed the lead to 2-0.

The Lady Lion defense of Martin, Mariah Fenimore, Hope Noe, Dougherty and Regan Laker stiffened to keep the game at 2-0 at the half.

Rushville kept the game at 2-0 until the 10:03 mark when New Castle’s Samantha Underwood scored to make it 3-0.

Late in the game, the Lady Trojans added goals from Courtney Denney and Malott to cap the 5-0 victory.

The Lady Lions end the season at 5-10-1.
