RUSHVILLE —
After two successful road trips (wins at Connersville and Indianapolis Howe), the Lions return to Hinshaw Field for their first game in front of the home crowd in the 2010 football season. The Lions are also jumping into conference action as they host the Shelbyville Golden Bears. Each week, head coach Chris Makowski and his coaching staff select a Practice Player of the Week. This week's honor goes to sophomore wide receiver/defensive back Cory Judd. “Cory is a hard-nosed kid. He rotates in on Friday night and set a key block last week to free Spencer Comer for his big run,” Coach Makowski said. “Week in and week out, we can count on him to come in and do what we ask. He is ready to play everyday,” Coach Makowski added. The Lions enter Week 3 with a perfect 2-0 mark while the Golden Bears are 1-1 on the season. For Rushville to be undefeated going into this week, the Lions had a tough test at Howe last week in which the Hornets took a 22-11 lead early in the third quarter. “I was very proud of how the kids battled. We struggled through three quarters and it would have been very easy for the guys to pack it in when we were down 22-11. It was a credit to the kids, our conditioning and depth that we were able to wear them down in the second half,” Coach Makowski said. “We knew Howe was a good team and they showed it. They have things moving in the right direction and they will be a dangerous team this year and in years to come.” In the win, the Lions got three touchdowns from Stephen Davis, including an 87-yard kick off return for a score, and two from Spencer Comer. On the ground, Davis rushed for 76 yards. Dustin Gilbert rushed for 70 yards. Comer rushed for 64 yards and Kaleb Lambert had 45 yards rushing. The defense was once again led by George Wilson with 12 tackles. Comer had 11 tackles and one interception. Kraig Bradley had eight tackles. Cole Hittle added an interception. Corbin Huffer recovered a fumble and Caleb Brown forced a fumble. The Bears knocked off Greensburg 21-6 in the opening week and fell last week at Franklin 13-7. Shelbyville has owned this rivalry for the past several years. The last win for the Lions over the Bears came in 2001. “We will have a chance if we can match them physically,” Coach Makowski said. “They have had our number the past several years and that is because they have been more physical. We cannot come out and be intimidated by the Bears.” Shelbyville has several weapons, but Patrick Ellis is one the Lions must contain. “We don't game plan for one player, because they do have several weapons, but we can't allow No. 5 (Ellis) to get to the open field,” Coach Makowski said. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Friday. Youth football introductions will take place during half-time.Sports
