Lane gets first Mt. Lawn feature on Fan Night

Chase Lane of Knightstown picked up the first feature win of his career Saturday night at the Mt. Lawn Speedway on Fan Appreciation Night. Nineteen cars started the MC Auto Repair Hornet feature with Lane lined up in 17th position.

John Massengale of New Castle took the lead on Lap 1 and led the first two laps. Keith Morris of Mt. Summit took over on Lap 3 with Lane mired back in 12th. Lane moved to third on Lap 7 and into second on Lap 8.

Laps 13-15 had Morris and Lane battling side by side until Lane moved in front on Lap 16 and led the rest of the way for the win.

Morris finished second followed by Joyce Dyer of Greenfield, Massengale, Jeff Sorrell of New Castle, Josh White of New Castle, Jerry Small of Arcadia, Levi McMahon of Atlanta, Josh Neal of Indianapolis, and Lee Lowe of New Castle.

Dyer set fast time for the Hornets at 19.663 and won the MC Auto Repair Dash for Cash. There we no heats.

In Motion Motor Late Model action, 16 cars started the 30-lap feature event. Bill Clark of Rushville jumped to the early lead and led the first 11 laps.

On Lap 12, Eric Evans of Greenfield, who started 13th, took the lead for good to get the win. The win was not easy for Evans as Jeff Marcum of Morristown moved into second place on Lap 14 and began to reel in Evans. Over the final six laps Marcum appeared to be glued to Evans rear bumper but could not get around for the top spot as Evans did a good job of protection the inside groove.

Evans said in victory lane, “I knew Marcum was back there because he let me know it on a few occasions. I stayed on the bottom and got the win.”

Marcum finished a close second followed by Scott Knepley of Greensboro, who was driving a new car this week after severely damaging his car last week. Brandon Mefford of Knightstown finished fourth followed by LJ Lines of Lewisville, Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City, William Mefford of Knightstown, Miles Sexton of New Castle, Johnny Fugate of Cambridge City and Scott Runion of Mooreland.  Runion was making his first start since the Raintree as he returned for a work assignment in Columbus, Ohio.

Claborn set fast time at 16.378 with Evans winning the Razzles Dash for Cash.

In the Dependable Drywall Thunder Car division, Ryan Amonett of New Castle won for the seventh time in 2009. Chris Bolyard of Rushville led the first four laps with Cody Walker of Sulphur Springs taking over on Lap 5. Walker gave way to Ed Knott of Muncie on Lap 10 when Jameson Owens of Greenfield took the top spot on Lap 11. Neil Marcum took the lead from Owens on Lap 17 and led until Lap 24 when Amonett took over and led the rest of the way.

Marcum finished second followed by Owens, Knott, Eddie Claborn of Cambridge City, Cody Walker, Jason Walker of Sulphur, Jim Walker of Cambridge City, Chris Bolyard and Adam Bolyard of Rushville.

Gibby Latham of New Castle set fast time at 18.441 and Knott won the Dependable Drywall Dash for Cash.

In the Central Indiana Mini Cup feature, Geoff Gerline of Carmel picked up the win followed by Chuck Colbert of Noblesville, Scott Swem of New Castle, Joe Gallagher of New Castle, Tim Phillips of Kalamazoo Mi., Troy and Patrick Morris of Arcadia.

Indy FastKarts feature went to Josh McQueary of Middletown, followed by Ryne Friederick of Indy, Chris Rittenberry, Daniel Pierce of New Castle, Keith Morris, Freddie Marlow, Josh Sutter of Brownsburg, Larry Keene of Brownsburg and Josh White of New Castle.

The Street Drag winner was Ronald Adams of Anderson beating Brian Lewis of Mooreland. Adams picked up $100 for his win and Lewis got $25 for second. Street Drag money came from contributions from the crowd most notably Mike Baldock of New Castle put up $100.

In the 3 and 4 year old Big Wheel races, Brandon Reamer was the winner followed by Austin Godfree and Ethan Starks. In 5 and 6 year old division, Whitney Fleetwood won with Andrew Evans second and Dustin Hill third. The 7-8 year old division saw Laura Adams pick up the win followed by Alex Rodmen and Rachel Nixon.

Police dogs Gizmo with trainer Mike Vaccaro of the Middletown Police and Hector with handler Jason Williams of the Henry County Sheriff Department put on a demonstration that would make anyone think twice about trying to escape their attack.

Next week will be the final points race of the 2009 season with three 50-lap feature in the Motion Motors Late Models, Dependable Drywall Thunder Cars and MC Auto Repair Hornet Division. Indy FastKarts will also be on the racing program along with Street Drags.





Willis Perfect at Madison



Lawrenceburg’s Jason Willis made history on Saturday night as he became the first driver to score a clean sweep in Vincennes University Midwest TQ Racing League competition.

Willis, driving his father Wayne’s No. 25 E-Town Landfill & Recycling, Miami Products, American Metal Cleaners three-quarter midget, started the evening off by turning the fastest lap in qualifications. Willis’ time of 15.266 seconds around the tight fairgrounds oval was just off the track record. He then went on to win the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel, his heat race, and the 25-lap feature.

At the start of the feature, Tad Cheek got the jump on pole sitter Jeff Bruce leading the field into turn one. By Lap 5, Cheek had pulled away to a four car length advantage over Joe Miller, Bruce, Nick Speidel and Kenny Byrge. Willis, who had started 10th, was pressuring Byrge and current point leader Tate Martz was right behind.

Willis took over the top spot on Lap 9 when Cheek spun in turn 4. He then went on to lead the final 17 laps taking the win over Speidel, Tim Lynch, Brett Hankins and Martz. Rounding out the top 10 were Kyle Lux, Craig Eaglin, Bruce, Cheek and Byrge.

Byrge and Chris Mann also were heat winners.

Jason Goff Wins at Speedrome

Jason Goff took the win in the 30-lap UMRA feature at the Indianapolis Speedrome Sunday evening.

The Fortville driver took the win in the first UMRA race at the Speedrome in five years after finishing second to his father Terry on Saturday night at the Mt. Lawn Speedway in New Castle. Second was Brent Turner, third went to Will Nedderman, fourth was Doug Roland, and Ron Combs rounded out the top five.

Quick time was Brent Turner at 12.774 seconds which broke the track record that was set by Terry Goff just one car earlier.

Ron Combs won the trophy dash for the four fastest qualifiers while Brandon Gray took the trophy dash for the four slowest qualifiers. Heat races were won by Travis Welpott and Jeremy Rainwater.

Certificates to the Dutch Mill Buffet in Milroy went to Brent Turner for being the fastest qualifier, John Shewbrooks for being the slowest qualifier, Ron Combs and Brandon Gray for their trophy dash wins, Jeremy Rainwater for starting on the pole, Jason Goff for his feature win, and Michael Koontz for being the last car running at the finish of the feature. Brent Turner won the five gallons of fuel for being the G&G; Oil “Hard Charger of the Race”for coming from 11th to second in the feature.

The next UMRA race will be on Sept. 12 at the Decatur County Fairgrounds in Greensburg.
