Garland makes run to title match

RUSHVILLE — In Match 280 of the wrestling state finals, the lights shown down on one mat to end the 2012-13 season. One competitor was no surprise Ð Perry MeridianÕs No. 1 ranked Donte Winfield. The other was a surprise to some (but not to area wrestling fans) - RushvilleÕs Joe Garland.

Both senior wrestlers had won three matches in the state finals to get to the title match with the state title just six minutes away.

The first period saw the score remain 0-0 after the first two minutes as both wrestlers looked for points to attack.

Garland chose the defensive position in the second period and earned an escape to take the 1-0 lead. Winfield came back with a takedown and two-point near fall to grab the 4-1 lead.

In the final period, Winfield started in the defensive position and got an escape and held on for the 5-1 victory to claim the state title and give Garland a well-deserved state runner-up finish.

Garland (39-4) started the state finals with a 3-1 victory over Ben Davis sophomore Norman Ogelsby Friday evening.

On Saturday, Garland opened the day with a 2:43 pin of Hanover CentralÕs Josh Bartoszek to reach the Final Four. In the semifinal, Garland upended No. 2 ranked Wesley Bernard of Cathedral by the final of 3-2 to reach the title match against Winfield.

     In what some called a tie, scorers Scott McCambridge and Tim Rogers who were situated directly above the start finish line in the scoring tower gave the win to Kyle Donahue of St Louis Mo. over second place James Edsall of Indianapolis by mere inches in the Legends feature.

  • Indiana Junior All-Stars sweep

    LOUISVILLE - Trey Lyles of Indianapolis Tech scored 18 points and James Blackmon Jr. of Marion added 13 points on a perfect shooting performance Saturday (June 8) at St. Xavier High School, lifting the IndyStar.com Indiana Junior All-Star boys to an 86-73 victory over Kentucky and a “double sweep” of the 2013 series.

  • Thompson, Stewart and Hughes win

    Jason Thompson of Shirley picked up his second feature win of the year Saturday night at the Mt. Lawn Speedway in the Van Hoy Oil Late Model division.  Thompson took the lead of the race on the very first lap when he passed both Brock Anderson of Albany and Kent Carson of Richmond. Thompson led all the way for the win.
