Rushville opened the wrestling season by going 3-0 in the Rushville Invitational to win the team title. Thirteen Lions went undefeated on the day with five wrestlers – Tyler Dawson, Joe Hunter, Collin Hillen, Jon Flanary and Elijah McClurg – going 3-0.
“For the first meet of the year, I was very pleased with the way the team performed, especially with four freshman in the starting line-up,” RCHS head coach Jack Day said. “With a mix of young talent and the senior leadership, I think we could have an outstanding year. We will go back and work on our conditioning and get ready for Shenandoah on Tuesday night.”
The Lions opened the day with a 64-12 victory over Lawrenceburg.
At 103, Cole Maggard won by fall and Sarah Schlechtweg followed with an11-1 win at 112. Justin Wilson posted a 5-4 win at 119.
At 130, Carl Judd won a 6-2 decision. Dawson won by fall at 135. Hunter (140) and Hillen (145) won by forfeit before Keith Miers won by pin at 152.
George Wilson took a forfeit at 160. Flanary and McClurg followed with pins at 171 and 189. Robby Hadley won in a :23 fall at heavyweight.
Rushville then knocked off Wapahani 60-18.
Maggard won 14-6. Judd and Dawson both took forfeits. Hunter won 7-5 before Hillen and Justin Crites (152) won by forfeit.
Jeremy Komlanc won 15-0 at 160 with the next three Lions – Flanary, McClurg and Adam Meyer – all winning by forfeit. Hadley won by pin at heavyweight.
In the final match, the Lions defeated Greensburg 64-14.
Wilson got the first win for the Lions with forfeit at 119. Zach Barton won by pin at 125 and Dawson won by pin at 135. Hunter took a forfeit and Hillen pinned his opponent. Miers posted an 8-0 shut out and Crites followed with a win by pin at 160.
Flanary won by disqualification at 171. McClurg and Meyer rounded out the Lions' victory with pins.
The Lions return to action at 6 p.m. tonight at Shenandoah.
