Portage wins state gymnastics title

RUSHVILLE — After falling to No. 2 Valparaiso in the sectional and regional, No. 1 Portage edged Valparaiso for the state title in gymnastics Saturday in Worthen Arena at Ball State University. Portage finished with a team total 112.600 with Valparaiso finishing with 112.100. Ft. Wayne Bishop Dwenger, the defending state champ, was third with 110.975. Hoosier Heritage Conference’s New Palestine finished seventh with a team total of 1:04.625.

Portage also took home the top individual spot as senior Mackenzie Barcelli won the all-around title with a 38.325 total. She also won the individual floor exercise with a 9.675.

Valparaiso senior Morgan Algozine won the individual title on the vault with 9.875 and on the bars with 9.700 (second straight year). Algozine has six individual championships.

Owen Valley freshman Anna Watkin won the balance beam title with 9.575.

Rushville freshman Kylee Elleman, the first Lady Lion to reach the state finals, competed on the beam and finished 47th with a score of 8.025.

"Kylee was disappointed with the fall, but we were so proud of her performance and her deameanor with other gymnasts during the meet. We can only go up from here," RCHS coach Jenni Philpot noted.

Lions outlast Spartans 9-8
Connersville and Rushville scored a combined 17 runs through four innings. The Lions then shut down the Spartans offense the final three innings to take the 9-8 victory.

Lady Lions third at track sectional
CONNERSVILLE – The Lady Lion track team traveled to Connersville for the IHSAA track sectional. The host Lady Spartans won the team title with 127 points. Hagerstown was second with 98 followed by Rushville with 94.5.
Union County finished fourth with 85 followed by Richmond 62, Cambridge City Lincoln 56, Centerville 46, Seton Catholic 23, Tri 12.5 and Northeastern 11.

YORKTOWN – The Lady Lion tennis team traveled to Yorktown to take on the Lady Tigers. The host squad knocked off the Lady Lions 5-0 in varsity action. Rushville is 4-12 overall and 0-7 in the HHC.
