Eagles soar to spoil Homecoming
Three plays in the second quarter changed the Homecoming game Friday as the Lions played host to the Delta Eagles.
Trailing 12-7 with less than four minutes to play in the first half, the Lions had the ball at the Delta 32 yard line. A sack resulted in a 7-yard loss. Two plays later, a fumble gave the ball to the Eagles and they capitalized with a touchdown. On the Lions next possession, Delta recovered another Lion fumble and added another touchdown with :07 left in the half to grab a 26-7 lead.
That momentum swing allowed the Eagles to leave Rushville with a 44-26 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.
Delta opened the game with a six-play drive, highlighted by a 57-yard pass from Brooks Medaris to Skyler Case. Kyle Stevens capped the drive with the 8-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed and the Eagles led 6-0 with 9:02 left in the first quarter.
The Lions immediately answered. Craig Jones took the ball on the reverse and then threw to Blaek Combs for the 68-yard touchdown. Matt Zinaman, who later was named Homecoming King, added the point after an the Lions led 7-6 with 8:43 to play in the first quarter.
Delta scored on its next possession. A 21-yard touchdown run by Greg Heban pushed the lead to 12-7 with 6:15 to play in the first quarter.
The teams traded the ball back-and-forth until Rushville took over with 6:30 to play in the half. That led to the three big plays giving Delta the momentum at the half.
A 36-yard touchdown run by Heban pushed the lead to 20-7 and a Medaris bootleg run for the 8-yard touchdown made it 26-7 at the half.
Zinaman was joined by Melissa Callahan as Homecoming Royalty at the half.
The Lions opened the third quarter with eight rushing plays—the last was a 42-yard scamper by Spencer Comer that saw him dive into the corner of the end zone for the score. The 2-point conversion failed, but the Lions had cut the deficit to 26-13 with 6:31 to play in the third quarter.
A big return by Teddy Dawson set the Eagles up at the Rushville 30-yard line. Six plays later had Stevens in the end zone to extend the Eagles’ lead to 32-13 with 4:47 on the clock in the third.
Rushville had an answer, once again. A 9-play drive was capped by a fourth down pass from Spencer Comer to a leaping Combs for the touchdown. Combs took the ball away from Delta’s Garth Glore for the touchdown. The deficit was 32-19 as the teams headed to the fourth quarter.
The Lions tried an onside kick, but the Eagles’ Dane Humphrey came out with the ball. Ten rushing plays later, Stevens was back in the end zone to give Delta a 38-19 lead with 7:27 to play.
Rushville fumbled on the first play of their next possession and Delta recovered. It was Stevens again that capped the seven-play drive to push the lead to 44-19 with 4:04 left in the game.
The Lions added a touchdown with :31 to play as Spencer Comer scored his second of the game. Zinaman’s point after made the final margin 44-26.
The Lions (4-3) host Pendleton Heights next Friday for Senior Night. The Arabians defeated Guerin Catholic 41-22 Friday.
