The Lions opened the basketball season at home against Heritage Christian Saturday. Rushville led after the first quarter 13-8, but the Eagles led at every other break en route to the 62-54 victory in the season opener for both squads.
Rushville jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a Hunter Orme free throw and Nate Hoeing 3-pointer. Back-to-back triples by Heritage Christian’s Seth Somers gave the Eagles the lead, but Rushville responded with a 9-0 run. Nate Hoeing’s bucket started the run and Hoeing and Orme contributed as the Lions led 13-6. Two free throws by the Eagles’ Luke Mennen cut the deficit to 13-8 after the first eight minutes.
Heritage Christian then went on its own run. A 3-pointer by Somers was answered by Rushville’s Alex Yurack, but the Eagles then seven straight points to lead 18-16.
With the score even at 18-18, Heritage Christian’s Anthony Warrum finished a fast break with a dunk. The celebration by the Eagle fans was short-lived as Rushville found Orme with the answer on the other end with the two-handed flush. Orme’s 3-pointer put the Lions on top with 2:20 to play in the first half. Heritage Christian scored five straight before Mitch Laird’s 3-pointer ended the half with the Lions trailing 27-26.
Rushville managed only seven points in the third quarter. The Eagles scored the first six points - four from Mennen. Orme got the Lions on the board at the 3:43 mark and Hoeing’s traditional three-point play with 3:21 had the Lions within two at 33-31.
A 3-pointer by Derek Foresman and bucket by Somers gave the Eagles a 40-33 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Rushville closed the gap to four points at 44-40 on a Laird free throw. The Eagles responded with seven straight points, including another bomb by Somers (26 points). The Lions cut the deficit to 58-52 on an Orme traditional three-point play. That was as close as the Lions could get. The Eagles hit four free throws to seal the victory.
Following Somers’ 26 points for the Eagles was Warrum with 16. Hoeing and Orme led the Lions with 14 points.
In the first game of the night, the Lion junior varsity squad got off to a 12-3 start after the first quarter and never let the Eagles take control of the game in winning 44-37.
The Lions were led by Alex Yurack with 16 points. Bryce Dye chipped in with eight and Kris Combs had seven.
