RUSHVILLE —
New Castle's Harold Scott and Ryan Amonett will be taking their open wheel modified to the Mt. Lawn Speedway.
Scott is a 5-time winner of the Raintree 100 at the famous Mt. Lawn oval but has not been there since 2003. Scott began his racing career at Mt. Lawn in the late 60's and has more Raintree victories than any other competitor.
Amonett finished third in last year's Raintree but has not competed at Mt. Lawn since. Amonett will be driving for Scott Chew of Knightstown and Steve Davis of New Castle.
Area drivers, all with considerable Mt. Lawn experience, Damon Breedlove of Greenfield, Don Skaggs of Modoc, Darrell Skaggs of Cambridge City, Jeff Lane of Knightstown, Joe and Chris Jennings of Richmond and Rodney Cropper of McCordsville have all indicated they will be in the starting lineup.
Several other Modified drivers have shown considerable interest in participating in the race.
Lane holds the Modified track record at Mt. Lawn when he turned a lap of mark on Aug. 31, 1998 at 15.576 seconds. Lane won the Raintree back in 1997 and Don Skaggs has one Raintree win in 1991.
Winchester Speedway race director Jimmy Wyman of Muncie is promoting the race and is working very hard to bring a full field of Mods to Mt. Lawn for this show.
The last time Modifieds came to Mt. Lawn was on Aug. 23, 2003 when Enod, Ohio, native Brian Nestor pass Shorty Hinshaw of Mooreland on lap 19 of the feature to take home first prize.
Late Models, Thunder Cars, Hornets, Rookie Hornets, FasKarts and the Modifieds will make up the racing program.
Late Model car counts are increasing and more first timers are expected to have their cars ready in the very near future.
According to Rick Sweigart, Mt. Lawn owner, ÒThe tire package we have for this year's Late Model class seems to be working out very well. Most teams are expecting to be able to run the entire year on three or four sets of tires. In the past if you wanted to run up front you had to purchase new tires each week at a considerable expense to the car owner. After the initial expense of the car, tires have always been the most expensive item the car owner must buy to maintain their racecar.Ó
Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for kids 6-10 with 5-and-under free. Mt. Lawn is located at 1494 S CR 400 W just 5 miles west of New Castle.
