Preparing for winter driving

RUSHVILLE — Although recent weekend temperatures have not necessarily indicated how close winter and consistently colder weather will effect our daily lives, it is time for county residents to plan for the coming months.

In this time of calm before the first winter storm, it is recommended that area residents prepare themselves and their vehicles for the winter season.

Vehicle owners should make sure their vehicles are in good working order.

One area of concern should be your windshield wipers. They should be checked and replaced if necessary.

All vehicle fluid levels including windshield wash fluid should be checked and maintained.

Antifreeze should be added to your vehicle’s radiator instead of water, and gas levels should not be allowed to remain near empty.

Tire tread and air pressure should also be checked so vehicles do not loose traction on wet or slick road surfaces.

Each vehicle should contain a winter emergency kit. It is recommended that the kit contain enough non-perishable food to last for three days and three gallons of water (one gallon for each day). Also include a battery-operated radio and flashlight with additional batteries for each. Extra clothing should be contained in the kit including an additional pair of gloves, hat and a blanket. Other necessary items include a list of emergency phone contacts, a copy of a photo ID and any medicines taken on a daily basis.

It is also recommended that a small amount of cash also be placed in the kit as a power outage could limit or restrict ATM or credit card use.

All of these items should be kept in a water-tight container such as 5-gallon bucket with a lid or a water repellent bag.

Drivers should allow additional time to arrive at destinations and, when traveling in inclement weather, driving speeds should be adjusted accordingly; posted speed limits are for driving in optimum road conditions.

Also, seat belts should be worn by all passengers at all times.
